My fucking ankle. I finally had Brooks letting his guard down and releasing himself from the tight hold of control he has, and I just had to jerk my foot the wrong way and ruin the mood. I went from frustrated to elated to confused all in the space of about five minutes.

For the first time in my life, I was kissing and feeling and rubbing up against a hot guy I really want to do more than kiss and feel and rub against. Then boom, I wince, and he freaks out and disappears into the freaking woods.

And dammit, I was really enjoying that kiss and the ponytail grab, and the lowering me down onto the couch… I wave my hand in front of my face, fanning myself as my cheeks burn at how fucking hot that was. And now I’m left here all pent up with no way of alleviating the ache between my legs that Brooks is responsible for causing.

I just need to know what I did wrong—what I said to make him run—because then I can work out how I’m going to fix it and somehow get through to Brooks that I’m pretty sure fate brought me here and orchestrated the events that have now led me to be in his cabin, wearing his clothes, cooking his meals, and wanting--needing--to do anything and everything to get through that unyielding facade that makes up Brooks Cooper.

As soon as I arrived in Woodward Valley, the town at the base of Moose Mountain, I felt a calm wash over me that I haven't felt since my father died. As a child, I may have spent most of my life wandering from base to base but as an adult, I've felt lost...until I found Moose Mountain. Then I came face to face with a grumpy, ornery, beautiful man and now I feel like it's one step forward and two steps back.

There’s something between Brooks and I. I know it like I know the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. There’s this inexplicable calling to him nestled deep inside me and there’s no way I can deny it. It’s a tangible thing that just keeps getting bigger and bigger the more time I spend with him.

I was terrified when he said he could take me back to the camp, so scared that if he takes me back, I’ll lose my first true chance of happiness, scared I’ll lose him. I can’t do that. Somehow—despite his lack of words—I know he needs me here. I’m not going anywhere.

Deciding to wait for Brooks to come back to me, I use the amazing cane he whittled for me and hobble out to the porch with a blanket and my new Aster Hollingsworth paperback. And that’s exactly where he finds me a few hours later when he returns.

“Hey,” I say, smiling up at him as he scales the stairs and frowns at me.

“You’ll get cold out here,” he grunts, before striding toward me, scooping me up in his arms, and carrying me inside.
